Fresh Holland car showcase Sunday, July 13, to feature Mustangs, Beatles tribute band

Two historic 50th year anniversaries will be celebrated at the 33rd Annual Fresh Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine and Tractor Demonstrate on Sunday, July 13.

Ford’s Mustang and the Beatles both mark five decade milestones this year, making them the highlight of the display that draws hundreds of entries and close to Trio,000 people each year.

“This is the very first time we’ve had a dual celebration at the showcase and will be a lot of joy for all ages,” said Steve Loewen, the event’s founder and organizer.

The Mustang made its debut at the Fresh York World’s Fair on April 17, one thousand nine hundred sixty four while the Beatles’ very first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Showcase in Fresh York took place two months earlier on Feb. 9, 1964.

Loewen said over a dozen Mustang owners received invitations to showcase their cars at the event.

Doug Crawford, of Leola, is one of the proud “pony” car owners putting his car on display.

Wielding a 1964½ Mustang was on his bucket list, said Crawford, whose wish was fulfilled almost two years ago when he purchased the classic car.

Crawford’s silver smoke grey two-door hardtop coupe with crimson vinyl interior runs on an 8-cylinder two hundred sixty CID engine. It has an AM radio plus manual four wheel drum brakes and 14-inch deluxe wire wheel covers with Ford logo. Optional features are the cruise-o-matic automatic transmission and power steering.

Crawford said the classic car can reach speeds of seventy five to eighty five and gets twenty two miles per gallon of gas.

“Mustangs connect generations of youthfull and old drivers,” he said.

Sponsored by the Fresh Holland Band, the showcase is also known for its “Vintage Glances & Sounds” and features music by the Fresh Holland Combo and Sway Bands.

“To honor the Beatles’ 50th Anniversary the combo band will perform their music,” said Leon Hillard, band leader and trumpet player.

Like the Mustang, Hillard believes all ages also relate to the Beatles’ music.

The band featuring Philadelphia vocalist, Calli Graver, will perform classic Beatles’ songs such as Hey Jude,” “She Loves You,” “I Wanna Hold Your Palm,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” “Help” and “Yesterday.”

During the showcase, the Eastern Lancaster County Library will hold a book sale at eleven Chestnut Drive (adjacent to the park) and the Fresh Holland Band Museum, located in the library, will also be open for visitors.

This year the car demonstrate offers a fresh food menu with blueberry muffins, pulled pork, beef brisket, chicken, combo sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ rack of ribs, beans, coleslaw, French fries, hand-dipped ice fluid and floats as well as drinks.

The event is held at the Fresh Holland Community Memorial Park, East Jackson Street. It starts at nine a.m. and finishes with awards given at Three:30 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the Fresh Holland Band and Fresh Holland Community Memorial Park. Admission is $1.
