A DRIVER had a miracle escape after a car collided with a HGV lorry on a motorway before flying through the air and landing on its roof.
The white Vauxhall Corsa was left upside down on the busy M8 during rush hour, with ten emergency services vehicles called to the scene.
However, amazingly, the car’s driver was not gravely hurt and managed to crawl away from the mangled wreckage.
One onlooker told the Gazette: “It was unbelievable, it truly was like something out of an act film.
“The Corsa went flying through the air and spun round before landing on its roof.
“I can’t believe the driver walked away from that, I was sure they would need hospital treatment due to the force of the crash and the fact they were left suspended upside down in the vehicle, held in place only by their seatbelt.”
was able to get out of their car despite the harm caused to the vehicle.
The crash took place on the bridge near the airport, just before the slip road to Renfrew at Junction 27, and witnessed the Vauxhall Corsa flying through the air before crashing to a rest on its roof.
Ten emergency service vehicles attended the scene, with three fire engines, six police cars and an ambulance scrambled to help those involved in the collision.
Amazingly the driver was not left gravely injured and was able to get out of their car despite the harm caused to the vehicle.
A female officer was seen taking a statement from a masculine witness on the motorway at about 9.10am, while the contents of the badly bruised Vauxhall car were left splashed across the road.
The front and rear windscreens and driver’s window of the three-door hatchback were smashed, and glass from the vehicle was all over the road next to the car.
The 2nd and third lane of that spread of the motorway was closed off, bringing traffic to a standstill and causing delays of up to half-an-hour.
An onlooker said: “It was unbelievable, it truly was like something out of an act film.
“The Corsa went flying through the air and spun round in mid air before landing on its roof.
“I can’t believe the driver walked away from that, I was sure they would need hospital treatment due to the force of the crash and the fact they were left suspended upside down in the vehicle, held in place only by their seatbelt.”
Another driver, who was heading to work just after the crash and was caught in the resulting tailback, said: “The traffic was backed up as far back as the airport itself at 9am.
“It took ten minutes to get the brief distance to where the crash was and a police officer was taking a statement from a boy in the middle of the motorway.
“There was nobody in either the lorry or the Corsa at that point, I think one must have been in the ambulance parked right behind the Corsa and the other one maybe away in an earlier ambulance.
“There was a lot of harm to the Corsa but it looks like whoever was driving it might have been okay as it only seems to be windows that were smashed.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “At 8.55am on Monday, July Trio, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to reports of a collision involving a strenuous goods vehicle and a car on the M8, near Glasgow Airport.
“Upon arrival, it was found that our services were no longer required.”
A spokeswoman for Police Scotland added: “At around 8.55am police were called to a report of a road cold ash involving a car and a truck.
“The car was on its roof and obstructing the entire carriageway eastbound.
“Emergency services attended however there was no report of any serious injury.”
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance service said: “A 24-year-old masculine was treated on scene and did not require to be taken to hospital.”
