Wyandotte County Museum exhibit on the Underground Railroad resumes today

The Wyandotte County Museum, six hundred thirty one N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a fresh exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. Ten. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here presently on display at the museum. Special Labor Day weekend hours include nine a.m. to two p.m. Saturday, noon to four p.m. Sunday, and nine a.m. to four p.m. on Monday, Labor Day. There is no admission charge. Mariachi and Folkloric Festival scheduled today

A Mariachi and Folkloric Festival is scheduled until eleven p.m. Saturday, Sept. Two, at the Kansas National Guard Armory, 18th Street and Ridge Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. More than fifty different canopy tents will sell food and refreshments. There will be a four-hour Community Fiesta Dance indoors with different bands. A moonwalk, children’s games and a disc jockey also are part of the festival.

Unified Government offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. Four, for the Labor Day holiday. There will be no residential trash collection by Waste Management on Sept. Four. Trash pickup will be delayed one day that week.

Bonner library to commence 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program

Children may be signed up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program commencing Tuesday, Sept. Five, at the Bonner Springs City Library, two hundred one N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kan. The aim is to have read 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. If parents read a book a night to their child, they will have read 1,095 books in three years. Books can be repeated in this program. Sign up at the library to collect a folder and reading logs and embark reading. There will be a kickoff party at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14. Blood drive scheduled Sept. Five

The Central Avenue Betterment Association parade is scheduled at eleven a.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. The parade route starts at 18th Street and travels to Bethany Park at 11th and Central Avenue. LaPlacita Community Festival will be held after the parade, from one to three p.m., at Bethany Park. There will be music, food and activities.

Library in the Park celebration to be Sept. 9

Library in the Park, a celebration by the Kansas City, Kansas, Public Library, is scheduled from ten a.m. to two p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Big eleven Lake, at 11th and State Avenue. The free festival will include live music, food and activities. A book signing by Katherine Russell-Brown, author of “Little Melba and her Big Trombone,” will be part of the event. A family friendly movie will be shown. The event also includes a musical instrument “petting zoo” from the Kansas City Symphony, face painting, and other activities. Those attending will be able to sample tacos from five local restaurants in a contest to determine the best. Sheridan’s will provide frozen custard. The Grinter Place Summerfest will be eleven a.m. to four p.m. Sept. Nine at one thousand four hundred S. 78th, Kansas City, Kansas. Bonner library to begin 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program

Children may be signed up for the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program beginning Tuesday, Sept. Five, at the Bonner Springs City Library, two hundred one N. Nettleton, Bonner Springs, Kan. The aim is to have read 1,000 books before the child starts kindergarten. If parents read a book a night to their child, they will have read 1,095 books in three years. The Wyandotte County Museum, six hundred thirty one N. 126th St., Bonner Springs, has a fresh exhibit on the Underground Railroad on display. “Through Darkness to Light” features photographs taken mostly at night of sites along the Underground Railroad. The exhibit runs through Oct. Ten. There are companion artifacts from the pre-Civil War era here presently on display at the museum.
