Alleged car thief pleads guilty to related charges in Warren County

Staff Reporter

A Jamestown, NY man charged in Fresh York with stealing a car had pled guilty here to associated charges as well as attempting to run away from his preliminary hearing.

Travis J. Yates, 24, entered guilty prayers on two dockets before President Judge Maureen Skerda on Thursday morning during arraignment and switch of prayer proceedings.

At one, he pled guilty to charges including access device issued to another, receiving stolen property and DUI: managed substances – impaired capability – very first offense while a count of receiving stolen property was not prosecuted.

Conewango Township Police charged Yates back in May after receiving a call regarding a suspicious man at Butternut Court. Police said Yates had been driving a truck stolen from a Fresh York man and had used that man’s debit card to make fraudulent purchases.

Police also said Yates was under the influence of narcotics.

District Attorney Rob Greene said that Yates faces charges for stealing the vehicle in Fresh York state.

“They want him,” Greene said.

Yates also pled to a count of criminal attempt (escape) while a count of escape was not prosecuted.

In reading the charges, Skerda said that Yates, while waiting for his preliminary hearing, attempted to run out of the courthouse.

Law enforcement told the Times Observer at the time that surveillance movie displayed Yates, while outside of the basement courtroom, looking around to see if anyone was watching him. After he made a run for it, he was quickly apprehended by sheriff’s deputies.
